Mercy Housing

Mercy Housing is dedicated to providing affordable housing to women and mothers throughout the country. In Chicago, the organization runs the Miriam Apartments, a 66-unit, affordable housing complex for women in need. If you want to apply for help through Miriam Apartments, call them directly at 773-273-6700 to inquire about availability and eligibility requirements.

Chicago Chesed Fund

The Chicago Chesed Fund offers a variety of programs that provide one-time or reoccurring assistance to Jewish households in need. The Single Mothers Assistance Program offers financial assistance to single mothers who are working, but still struggling. Other programs provide help with food, clothing and rental assistance. Since the organization helps families facing a crisis, the response time is only a few hours after making a request for aid. To determine if you're eligible for the Single Mother Assistance Program or any other programs, call 847-679-7799.

The Chicago Firman’s Family Case Management Program is for pregnant women and infants up to 1 year of age. Although the program doesn't provide direct financial aid, it helps you find other types of assistance for yourself and your baby. The program assists with:

  • Prenatal and postnatal care

  • Scheduling appointments and getting healthcare referrals

  • Registering for health care for you and your child

  • Immunization requirements

  • Help applying for public assistance benefits

  • Referrals for other programs available from the state or non-profit organizations

The School-Age Program provides childcare services to at-risk children ages 6 to 12. Offerings include various enrichment activities, clubs and events to promote learning and encourage parental involvement.

Call 773-373-3400 for information on either of these programs.

One Million Degrees

One Million Degrees is a non-profit organization that provides community-college scholarships to low-income college students in Chicago, which can help single parents take the courses they need to advance in their careers and better support their families. In addition to receiving tuition assistance, students also get a stipend each semester to help pay for child care, books and any other expenses. Visit OneMillionDegrees.org to apply.

Catholic Charities

Catholic Charities is one of the largest non-profit organizations in Florida. The charity helps people going through a temporary financial hardship or emergency. Assistance programs are available to provide food, clothing and employment services. Emergency prevention services are available for people facing an eviction or foreclosure. In an effort to prevent homelessness in Florida, the charity provides referrals to housing programs and rental assistance. Although anyone struggling can apply for rental assistance, priority often is given to seniors, disabled and households with children.

St. Vincent De Paul

The Society of St. Vincent De Paul has locations statewide. The SVDP Parish Conferences extend financial assistance to help the needy with basic needs. Specific programs available may vary by location. For example, in Hillsborough County assistance is available for food, clothing, medication, gasoline, bus passes, utilities and rent. In Miami, SVDP developed subsidized rental apartments to offer reduced rent for low-income residents.

Jewish Family Services

Jewish Family Services has locations throughout Florida. The charity's aim is to help families in need, regardless of religious affiliation. JFS offers emergency financial assistance to help with basic needs, including rent. Since the assistance is only temporary, The Family Stabilization Program can help you achieve long-term self sufficiency. The program provides free supportive services to help with employment and money management.

United Way's 211

The United Way's 211 service provides free information and referrals to local programs that can help pay your rent. You can dial 211 or search the online database for help near you. The referrals include private organizations, churches and charities. For example, in Brevard County, the South Brevard Sharing Center offers rent assistance since government programs are not available in that area. In Orlando, the Orange County Crisis Assistance Programs provides a one-time rent payment for emergencies.
